For the first time, Huawei has overtaken Lenovo, which is facing recession period now, in the world server market.
According to market researcher enterprise ¡®Gartner and IDC¡¯, most of the major server vendors recorded sales decline in the fourth quarter of 2016, but Huawei only showed high growth.
According to ¡®Gartner¡¯, Huawei recorded revenue of USD 1.2498 trillion (KRW 1.446 trillion), ranking fourth after Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), Dell (DELL) and IBM. Huawei``s sales grew nearly twice as compared to the same period of last year. Huawei``s market share also increased 3.7% p to 7.7%. In the same period, Lenovo reported revenue of USD 946.88 million (USD 1.9486 trillion), down from USD 1.13361 trillion in the previous year period, with its market share falling from 7.5 % to 6.4 %. In the IDC announcement, Lenovo reduced its market share from 7.4% to 6.5%.
Lenovo also lost its place to Huawei in terms of shipments. Huawei server shipments grew 64 % to about 245,000 units from about 149,000 units in the same period last year in the fourth quarter of last year, ranking third after Dell and HPE. Lenovo shipped about 220,000 servers in the fourth quarter of last year, down 14 % from a year earlier (about 250,000 units).
Kim Hyun Soon- a researcher of ¡®Gartner¡¯ said, ¡®Huawei Fusion Server CH121 products have started to catch up with sales statistics of servers, and Huawei``s market share has skyrocketed. In particular, this product is sold in many markets including China, North America.¡¯
Meanwhile, Dell also made revenue increase along with Huawei. Dell``s server revenue for the fourth quarter was USD 2,578.18 million (USD 2,982.9 billion), up 1.8% from a year earlier (USD 2,533,499,000). In the same period, market share of Dell rose from 16.7% to 17.4%. HPE and IBM, on the other hand, saw significant decrease in revenue and shipments with Lenovo, but the market share remained the same as last year.
¡®X86 servers continue to be used as a major equipment platform when building large data center and integrated systems around the world,¡¯ mentioned Jeffrey Hewitt, vice president of ¡®Gartner¡¯. He also added ¡®X86 servers will continue to grow in the entire hardware infrastructure market.¡¯
