¡®Tele-presence¡¯ to be introduced in MWC on February 27

Call technology, which has been evolved from voice to video call, now is about to evolve to hologram call. The AR (Artificial Reality) technology scene of movie ¡®Minority report¡¯ is about to be reality.

SK telecom has revealed on February 23 that they will introduce new call technology ¡®Tele-presence¡¯ in Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 in Barcelona, Spain, which is to held from February 27.

5G based mobile-service-¡®Tele-presence¡¯ will help us to see long distance people as if in front of us through AR based hologram technology. Users will be able to talk to their partner, whom avatar is formed in AR, and can send virtual data around.

With this feature, Tele-medicine and remote-guide-Tele-maintenance will be possible. A large number of physicians in distant places will be able to discuss in real time while watching the 3D data of the complex body organs such as the patient``s heart or brain, or watching the internal or external structure of a 3D car implemented without going directly to the factory.

SK will also introduce Mixed Reality (MR) technology at MWC. This is the first time that the company is releasing MR technology to the public. MR is a technology that goes beyond AR and virtual reality (VR). For example, in many people and construction sites, the building exterior can be viewed as AR, while inside buildings can be viewed as VR and information can be shared. It can also be used for educational purposes, such as changing the classroom into universe space beyond moving the object above the classroom.

The company has been researching AR, VR technology since 2012. In 2015, the company also presented ``T-AR`` at the Google Developers Conference (I / O). Since 2015, US Leap Motion and Future Interaction technology are being developed to develop sensors and solutions for motion recognition. Since last year, SK has been developing the new sensor and image processor in Israel and 3D realistic AR and VR solutions. Besides, SK is planning to develop realistic education service using MR technology in cooperation with EBS.

SK Telecom added that it will cooperate with operators and developers in various fields as it is important to open and share to expand AR ecosystem. To this end, SK telecom unveiled the AR • VR integrated contents and service platform ``Real`` last year. ``T Real`` is an open platform that can be used by not only SK Telecom service but also external developers.
