Samsung Electronics and Apple are expected to launch new tablet PCs this spring as the global tablet PC market has not been out of recession for years. Interest in the tablet PC market will be boosted by the battle between the first and second giants of tablet PC market.

Samsung Electronics will hold a new product launch event to launch the Galaxy Tab S3 in Barcelona, Spain on February 26, the day before the opening of the ¡®Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017¡¯. Samsung Electronics has unveiled its Smartphone Galaxy S series at MWC, but this time Galaxy Tab S3 is expected to close the gap with Galaxy S8 due to the Galaxy Note 7 discontinuation this year. The industry expects the launch of the Galaxy S8 in mid-April after its launch in late March this year.

The Galaxy Tab S3 is a next generation of the Galaxy Tab S2, which was launched in Korea in August 2015. The Galaxy Tab S3 is expected to be launched in the domestic market within March. The Galaxy Tab S3 is expected to be equipped with a 9.6-inch super-organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, 4GB RAM, Android 7.0 Luke version and home button surface fingerprint sensor.

Apple is also expected to launch its three next-generation iPads in March and April. Experts are predicting that three major new products will be 12.9 inch iPad Pro 2, 10.1 ~ 10.9 inch bezel and 9.7 inch iPad Air 2 next generation model.

The experts in and out of the industry are expecting that Samsung Electronics and Apple``s new tablet PCs will be a breakthrough in the depressed market. On the other hand, it is predicted that the Tablet PC market will not be able to grow up considering the current obscure tablet PC position in the market. Tablet PCs are said to be the cause of the decrease in demand due to the difficulty in differentiating the product after the launch of 5-inch or larger screen Smartphone and the difficulty of replacing a tab to notebooks due to inconvenient typing as tabs have no keyboard. Also, the replacement cycle is longer than that of Smartphone.

The tablet PC market, which has been growing since Apple launched its first-generation iPad in April 2010, has grown steadily until peaking at about 230 million units in 2014. Market research firm IDC mentioned that tablet PC shipment in the fourth quarter of last year were 52.9 million units, down 20.1 % from previous year. The tablet PC sales have been decreasing for consecutive 9 quarters.

Tablet PC shipments totaled 174.8 million units last year, down 15.6 % from the previous year. Apple dropped 18.8% to 13.1 million units, while Samsung dropped 11.4% to 8 million units. Market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA) stated that tablet PC shipments in the fourth quarter of last year were 63.5 million units, down 9% from the previous year. Apple and Samsung shipped 13.1 million units, 8.1 million units, which show 19% and 10% decreases.

The same goes for the domestic market of Korea. According to Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the number of tablet PC mobile communication lines reached 548,118 as of the end of last year. In 2014, there were 576,649 units, and in 2015, there were 55,181 units, which show consecutive decrease in the domestic market.
