Seoul Metropolitan city selected Yongsan Electronics Market as urban regeneration area.

Urban regeneration will take place to reconstruct old business district in Yongsan Electronics Market area.

Seoul Metropolitan city has announced 17 regions including Yongsan Electronics Market area, Yeongdungpo, Kyunginro area as 2nd step ‘Seoul style urban regeneration’ area on February 16. Urban regeneration means the reconstruction by local communities instead of old whole demolishing style redevelopment. The regions, which selected as urban regeneration area will receive total 200 billion won from Seoul Metropolitan city for 5 years (below 1~5 billion won per region).

The areas, which were selected as 2nd step urban regeneration, are total 17 areas including 7 central regeneration areas along with 10 residence regeneration areas.

Particularly, Yongsan Electronics Market area will receive 20 billion won as they were selected as central regeneration area with 210,000 ㎡. Seoul Metropolitan city is planning to remodel Yongsan Electronics Market business district, which were decaying after 2000, as complex cultural exchange space. Also, it is planned to build digital campus under cooperation with neighboring Sookmyung Women’s University, local universities etc. and activate start-up support infrastructure such as currently operated ‘unlimited creativity cooperation space’, ‘digital forge’ etc. to attract young professionals.

In addition, the regions, which were selected as 2nd step ‘Seoul style urban regeneration’ includes Yeongdungpo-Kyunginro, Jeongdong, Majangdong, Doksan Woosijang, Cheongrangri-Jegidong area, 4.19intersection area, Suyu 1 dong, Chang 3 dong, Bulgwang 2 dong, Cheonyeon-Cheunghyeundong, Nangeok-Nanheandong, Anamdeong, Mook2 dong, Sinyeaongdong, Susaekdong, Mok2dong etc.

Jin Hee Seon-the head of Urban regeneration department stated that ‘Seoul style urban regeneration is planned to be expanded on the basis of decayed Seoul districts by selecting 30 regions for the second time following by 2015. Urban regeneration will be not only physical regeneration but also economic, social, cultural humanistic community regeneration’.
