Over 60 inch large TV TV ¡®UHD¡¯ in boom¡¦Fool HD to be hidden

`Full HD`, which gave place to Ultra High Definition (UHD), is expected to lose track of the big TV this year. UHD TV sales are expected to reach 99% this year for the first time in the 60-inch and larger TV market this year due to the popularity of UHD TVs and the rising popularity of UHD content.

According to market researcher IHS Markit, market share of UHD products, which stood at 60% in the 60-inch and larger TV panel market in 2015, rose to 85% in 2016 and to 96% in 2017. This year, it is expected to increase to 99%, replacing Full HD with overwhelming share.

Typically, for 60-inch and larger displays, the mainstream resolution products are changing every 10 years. HD TV panels, which accounted for more than half of the market by 2005, were pushed to full HD in 2006 and completely disappeared from the market in 2009. From 2015, UHD will push full HD in the 60-inch large-sized panel market, occupying more than half of its market share.

In particular, from this year, it is expected that the center of gravity shifts more rapidly than the 4K UHD TV with 8K resolution in the 60 inch or larger TV market. 8K has a resolution of only 7680 ¡¿ 4320 pixels, 16 times more than Full HD (1920 ¡¿ 1080) and 4 times more clear than 4K UHD (3840 ¡¿ 2160).

IHS Markit predicts that the proportion of 8K resolution TV products in the 60-inch and larger TV market will increase from 1% last year to 9% by 2020. "UHD is rapidly replacing full HD in the ultra-large TV display market, and display panel manufacturers are focusing on increasing their profitability by producing higher resolution products," a display industry official said.

As such UHD TV sales are increasing, TV makers Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which are the world`s first and second largest TV makers, are raising product sales with premium UHD TVs on the front side. As UHD panel prices are lowered, It is stimulating. Manufacturers are increasing their profitability by lowering the share of mid- and large-size low-resolution panels, which are less profitable, and introducing ultra-high-resolution, high-resolution products at the front.

When Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics introduced 65-inch UHD TVs in 2013, the price reached about 9 million won, but the same products have dropped to 2 million won. This year, the rate of UHD TV penetration is getting faster because of this year`s PyeongChang Winter Olympic UHD broadcast. Overseas content companies such as the US are also increasing the production of 4K content.

An industry expert said, "TV makers have strengthened their premium strategy centering on UHD TV, and UHD TV has outperformed full HD TV in terms of both shipments and sales."
