Premium hospital • SW corporations to develop ¡®local medical AI¡¯ beyond ¡®Watson¡¯

The Korean government will invest KRW 28 billion to develop a national medical AI solution that competes with IBM`s cancer-diagnosed artificial intelligence (AI) Watson.

The Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Information and Communication and the Information and Communication Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) announced that they will invite `Smart Data Analysis Intelligent Software Development Project`

Through this project, it is planned to develop SW that assists and supports medical staff by analyzing various data such as patient`s medical care, image, genome, and lifestyle information accumulated in domestic hospitals.

The project executives received KRW 28 billion for three years. ¡â Linked medical data for AI learning ¡â Integrated platform ¡â Intelligent medical SW by disease based on AI ¡â Diagnosis by disease, analysis, diagnosis, treatment, Develop visualization software.

The government aims to improve the health of the nation and find future growth engines by developing AI-based precision medical solutions from disease prevention to treatment in response to the increase in medical expenses caused by aging population. To this end, we will support the development of a national medical AI platform by constructing a consortium of hospitals, software companies and non-profit organizations with domestic medical data.

Currently, IBM`s Cancer Diagnosis AI platform `Watson-on-Colloz` is introduced at Gil Hospital, Gunyang University Hospital, Pusan National University Hospital, etc., It is participating as an assistant doctor in doctor`s diagnosis of cancer.

If Watson learns medical textbooks, medical journals, and medical specialty materials, and provides the best treatment methods to medical staff and patients, the native medical AI solution will be based on the big data Assistance • Assistance • Analysis • Diagnosis • Treatment • Prognosis management.

The Korean government proposed that at least three more hospitals should be involved in a consortium to improve the developmental challenges. In order to be able to serve as a citizen-experience service, it is necessary to provide SW service for 3 diseases out of 8 major diseases such as lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, cerebrovascular disease, brain metastasis, The development plan and the early 2019 service for one disease were clues.

Besides, in order to promote the commercialization of medical AI solution, we plan to launch it as cloud service by linking with P-HIS, which is currently being developed, so that it can be utilized in many hospitals and clinics. However, the hospital`s patient data used for AI`s learning data was reviewed by the clinical trial judging committee, and after the non-identification of personal information, it decided to adopt a strict security system in each step such as data collection, analysis, utilization and disposal.
