The Korean government has decided to unify the rapid charging system of electric cars into the `Combo 1` system in the current three ways.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (KIT) revealed on December 22 that it revised and announced the Korea Industrial Standard (KS).

International standard specifies five fast charging methods: combo 1, combo 2, car demo, GB & T, and AC (alternating current) 3 phases. Korea is using AC three phase, car demo, and combo one.

However, Kookwon has discussed with domestic and overseas electric car makers, charger makers, charging companies, etc., and decided to unify it by combo one way after deliberation of industry standard council.

Meanwhile, Combo 1 is a system that can use both DC and AC at the same time. This method has been adopted by the American Automobile Engineers Association (SAE) in North America such as the United States and Canada. The charging time is faster than the AC three-phase method, which is advantageous for vehicle communication compared to the car demo method.

According to a study by the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers, 67% of the electric vehicles that have been distributed this year use the Combo 1 system. The battery charging system under development from 50 MWh to 400 MWh is also considering combo 1 application. Currently, electric vehicle charging methods are as follows: △ Spark, i3, Ionic, Bolt △ Soul, Combo 1, Reiga, Demo △ SM3, AC 3 △ S90D supercharger.

According to the unification of the rapid charging system, the company expects to increase the production efficiency of the electric car maker, reduce the manufacturing cost of the charger, reduce the maintenance cost of the charger, and solve the user inconvenience.

On the other hand, Kookjeon added that it plans to guide the rapid charger distributing agency to maintain and manage the multi-type charger so that the existing electric car users of the combo 1 and other types will not be inconvenienced.
