[Digital Times, Jong Ye-rin] Recently, the German government has banned some smart watches for children. The threat of hacking to Internet of Things (IoT) devices in Europe and the United States has increased, and the fear of abuse of personal information and kidnapping has increased. As the German government`s interest in the domestic smart watch market is growing, the three domestic telecom operators have said that they are "completely safe and have no safety problems".
In the Korean market, smart watches for children are becoming popular as a means for parents to identify their children and make emergency calls. As of now, SK Telecom has launched 7 smart watches. SK Telecom`s cumulative subscribers reached 520,000 as of November.
The European Commission`s European Consumer Agency (BEUC) has pointed out in its report last month that the lack of security features for children`s smart watches is not safe from hacking. A source in the domestic telecom industry said, "There is a risk of hacking only if you use cheap terminals that do not have security features."
The three mobile carriers are in complete security management. According to the telecommunication industry on November 26, mobile carriers have encrypted location information (GPS) in accordance with the ¡°Act on the Protection and Utilization of Location Information, etc.¡± and store it for 3 months and immediately delete it which is based on the same criteria as GPS management in general smartphones.
Besides, mobile carreirs said it is adopting a more thorough security management policy for children`s smart watches. SK Telecom has been granted permission to access only its parents through application authentication when confirming the location. In addition, the integrated security control center periodically implements hacking check and security diagnosis.
Especially, KT emphasized that it can prevent hacking by using smart sockets layer (SSL) and a device using US Federal Standard Algorithm (AES) as a smart watch for children. LG U Plus explained that it has been granted permission to parents thoroughly by checking the wisdom information of the smartphone that accesses the most used location check function.
Despite of these three security policies, there are some concerns. Kim Seung-joo, a professor at Korea University`s Information Security Graduate School, said, "IoT devices have a high risk of hacking because they are connected by a network because they are connected by a network." When designing a device, We need to establish a development process in the direction of the government, and through government review, we will need to make efforts to distribute products above certain standards.
