"If we face regulation now in the inflection point of the Fourth Industrial Revolution or if we are behind China because of the lack of fusion research, Korea will be inferior."
Professor Lee Sang-heon of Korea University Anam Hospital, who gave a keynote speech at the 2017 Bio-Fusion Technology Conference held at Imperial Palace Hotel in Nonhyun-dong, Seoul, hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Science and Technology.
In this event, which was held under the theme `Bio Economy Opening with A, B and C` (AI • Big data • Convergence), experts from industry, academia attended. We are paying attention to the changes that are fusing with this bio. In particular, experts emphasized that the government should build a platform that can secure, share and utilize `data` that will influence the competitiveness of the future bio industry, and urgently improve the regulations that prevent it.
A representative example is medical information that does not exceed the hospital walls. In hospitals, a huge amount of data is generated by patients, medical staff, various medicines and medical equipment used. However, it is difficult to use different information systems for each hospital and to combine them because they are not standardized. It is also a stumbling block because it is classified as sensitive information under the Personal Information Protection Law and there are limitations that companies or researchers outside the hospital can utilize.
Professor Lee, who was the head of the development project of "Precision Medical Hospital Information System" (P-HIS), which the government is promoting as a national strategic project, said, " The era of patient-specific medical institutions, such as genetic engineering, sensors and AI (AI), creates customized treatments in the medical system and builds data from all hospital information systems.
Anjin-woong DGIST Wellness Convergence Research Center Jang Doo, who developed "Wellness Human Care Platform" in cooperation with hospitals and companies, developed the already proven technology, and is sharing the data sharing between clinics and hospitals. "He said." It is urgent to formulate measures to utilize big data through system maintenance and information standardization. "
"In order to diagnose, predict and treat diseases accurately, it is necessary to manage and utilize biological basic research data and clinical data including genome information in an integrated way," said Kwang Kwang-hee, director of future research policy department at Korea Biotechnology Research Institute. "We need to find a way to build a bio-big data platform and make good use of our capabilities," he said.
Lee Suk-rae, director of the research and development policy department at the Ministry of Information and Communication also noted that, "There are a lot of new industries that can come out of combining Korea`s excellent ICT competence with bio," he said.
