Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics along with other major Korean companies have announced that they will boost the autonomous car market into future growth businesses, but it is not possible to compete with major global players such as Google at this time. Domestic companies have advised that they should acquire and merge a number of software companies related to autonomous car to secure competitiveness.

In a briefing on the autonomous drive market at El Tower in Yangjae-dong, Seoul, a senior researcher of autonomous driving company Jeremy Carlson of market researcher IHS Markets said, "Recently, Samsung Electronics has been granted permission to test autonomous vehicles in California. I have acquired 20 or so places, "he said.

"Google has already been around for a long time," he said. "In order to enter the autonomous mobile market, long-term data collection and analysis are needed, and domestic companies including Samsung Electronics are slower than that."

However, Carlson estimates that Korean companies have world-class competitiveness in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays for automobiles, and batteries for telecommunications and electric vehicles.

Then, Korean companies need to innovate their software in order to quickly become competitive in the autonomous car market. "It`s not easy, but in Japan, we have to move beyond the limit of being a hardware supplier," he said. "Software innovation is the most challenging task, and we need capabilities and solutions that bring together technologies."

When asked about the advantages and disadvantages of domestic companies, Carlson said, "Samsung has built a strong position by acquiring Haman, a leading software company." However, autonomous navigation software requires different efforts than before and there will be many companies to do. "

"LG Electronics has supplied batteries to GM Volt electric vehicles and LG is the best in the battery market," said Eugyl Woolson, Infotainment & Research Adviser at ADAS. I am working well as a company. " However, Hyundai and Kia added that they lacked the response to the shared economic market such as the car sharing that emerges in the era of autonomous driving, and should have various experiences not only in domestic but also overseas.

Meanwhile, the IHS Market forecasts that the domestic ADAS market (excluding voluntary parking support) will reach an average annual growth rate of 29.5% over the world average (24.3%) from last year to 2023 based on the number of vehicles installed.
