Export support while crying ‘anti nuclear power’…Government in contradiction

While the Korean government is strongly pushing the `anti nuclear power plant` policy and at the same time, it is contradictory to actively support the export of nuclear power plants. It is also pointed out that it is inevitable that there will be a disruption in the export of nuclear power plants as the nuclear power plant is being put to the fore on the grounds of ‘national security’.
Baek Woon-kyu, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy, held a `Nuclear Export Strategic Council` on October 10 at the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation in Jongno-gu, Seoul, participating in the Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korea Trade & Insurance Corporation, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Hyundai E & C. Minister Baek discussed the conditions for exporting nuclear power plants, strategies for responding to major countries, and measures for nuclear power plant financial risks at this meeting.
Minister Baek, at the meeting, presented a plan to support the ordering of nuclear power plants in the UK, Czech Republic and Saudi Arabia. KEPCO and the director of the industrial division will visit Britain to discuss the export of nuclear power plants through a meeting of local ministers and a bilateral meeting of government officials in connection with the export of nuclear power plants to the UK, this month. It is planned to support Korea-type nuclear power plant export through 10-day high-level consultation of the Korean-Czech government and inspection of the nuclear power plant on the occasion of the warming of the special envoy of the Czech Republic on October 10 and 14.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia will meet with Secretary of State for Economic Planning in Saudi Arabia at the "Korea-Saudi Vision 2030 Council" in Seoul on October 27 to discuss the cooperation of the two countries on the Saudi nuclear power plant project. Besides, Minister Baek ordered orders for nuclear power plant construction companies such as nuclear power corporations such as KEPCO, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power & KEPCO, financial institutions such as Export-Import Bank and Korea Trade & Investment Corporation, and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Hyundai E & C. By 2035, the United Kingdom is planning to build 3 GW of power, the Czech Republic to build a 1 GW nuclear power plant, and Saudi Arabia to build a 2.8 GW nuclear power plant by 2030.
However, it is pointed out that the opposite policy of nuclear power plant can catch up the export of Korean type nuclear power plant.
Recently, KHNP has passed the main certification of European standard of design of EU-APR, which is the European export type nuclear power plant of APR 1400, and has set up a base for exporting nuclear power to Europe. However, (Korea) is not looking to build a nuclear power plant in his country. Shin-Kori 5 and 6 are Korean-style APR 1400 models. The EU-APR, which has passed this certification, is designed to fit this model in Europe.
A nuclear specialist in Korea stated, "Because of national security, etc., while promoting a nuclear power plant in Korea, the safety of other nationals can be seen as a self-destructive situation."
"The Korean government`s energy policy shift reflects domestic characteristics such as the earthquake risk and the dense nuclear power plant," he said. He said, "The government will actively support the export of nuclear power plants to help the nation`s interests by strictly observing profitability and risk."
