LG Electronics to invest KRW 600 billion in Changwon factory¡¦ ¡®Smart factory¡¯ in 5 years

LG Electronics is expected to invest KRW 600 billion by 2022 to rebuild the Changwon factory as a smart factory.

LG Electronics said it will show a model of a virtuous cycle factory that increases productivity by 50% and increases the number of new recruits by 250 every year.

The company signed a contract with Gyeongsangnam-do and Changwon City to invest in smart factories at its Changwon plant on September 27. LG Electronics will invest KRW 600 billion by the year 2022 from the end of this year, turning Changwon 1 into a smart factory under the agreement.

The new plant will cover a total floor area of 256,324§³ (about 77,000 pyong) and a total floor area of 336,000§³ (about 100,000 pyong). State-of-the-art production system is using core technologies of the fourth industrial revolution such as Internet (IoT), AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Big Data.

LG Electronics plans to reduce greenhouse gas and energy costs by 40% by applying eco-friendly energy facilities such as solar panels, energy storage devices (ESS) and high-efficiency air conditioning facilities to the plant that produces refrigerators, open and water purifiers to be. Annual production capacity is more than 3 million units, which is expected to increase by more than 50%.

"The smart factory has been in place for three years," said LG Electronics CEO Chang-Won Oh, CEO of Oh In-sik. "We will also proceed with the washing machine factory in Tennessee, currently under construction. The efficiency of the washing machine is enhanced by applying the autonomous process which is developed by dividing the key parts of 300 washing machines into driving module, exterior module and various functional modules."

LG Electronics also emphasized that there is no concern of labor shortage caused by the switch to smart factories.

Lee Hyeon-hyun, president of LG Electronics` H & A business division, met with reporters before attending the "Industry and Commerce Ministerial Meeting with LG Electronics and KEPCO" at the Kensington Hotel in Seoul, Korea. "We need more people to continue to supply as production volume increases. Therefore, the number of new hires will increase rather than decrease in the number of employees.¡±

It plans to recruit more than 250 people every year mainly in the research and development (R & D) manpower at Changwon 1 & 2 sites as the company increases its production capacity by more than 50%. The new plant, which will be completed in early 2023, will start operations in 2021.

Meanwhile, the company also plans to buy a factory near the Changwon 2 plant and transfer some of the production facilities and facilities of the Changwon 1 plant by the end of next year to make sure there will be no disruption in production.
