Samsung Electronics, which is aiming for the top spot in the global TV market for 12 consecutive years, is deepening in its attention. It is due to the £¿Quantum dot TV£¿ camp that Samsung Electronics is pushing for next generation TV is not growing as fast as it considered.

On the other hand, LG Electronics` competitor, `Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) TV` is growing rapidly this year. Accordingly, Samsung Electronics is struggling to develop a detailed strategy for spreading Quantum dot TV.

According to the industry on September 19, Samsung Electronics introduced ultra-high-definition TV, which was first applied to the technology of Quantum dot (Quantum dot) in 2015. However, quantum dot TV is not proliferating.

The company will first disclose quantum dot technology, which does not contain cadmium, to the industry and show how to expand the ecosystem, how to provide cadmium-free quantum dot materials to partners, and latecomers to make quantum dot. And how to maintain the technology gap until it develops, but has not yet come to a conclusion.

Cadmium Quantum dot is a commonly used material for making TV materials. It is classified as a harmful substance, so if you use cadmium in accordance with the regulations of electronic appliances in the world such as Europe, it will not be able to sell products.

Currently, quantum dot TV camp is limited to Samsung Electronics, TCL of China and Vestel of Europe. Meanwhile OLED TV camps include LG Electronics, China`s Skyworld, Concorde, Changhong, Japan`s Sony £¿ Panasonic, and Europe`s Philips, Grundik, Lonebe.

A Samsung representative said, "Quantum dot TV market is not big enough because there are few companies that is able to make quantum dot material without cadmium. Samsung Electronics opened its own developed technology. There is a dilemma that cannot be easily made public because of the technology chase. "

According to actual market researcher IHS Markit, quantum dot TV share in the entire TV market was only 1.5% and 0.8% in the first and second quarters of the year, respectively.

Second-tier companies tend to follow suit when the first-tier company releases next-generation products. Even though Samsung Electronics does not open TV technology to other makers, Samsung Electronics has introduced new TV products such as Curved Smart, Super High Definition (UHD), etc., and later companies have imitated it and made a market together.

However, cadmium free quantum dot TV, a technology developed by Samsung Electronics, is a technology that is difficult for latecomers to implement, so other TV manufacturers are not able to make quantum dot TVs easily.

Samsung Electronics has held QLED & HDR10 Summit in China and other countries in the United States and Germany in order to exchange quantum dot TV technology, but it is not enough to expand the camp yet.

Also, Samsung Electronics is trying to broaden the scope of Quantum dot TV because if other TV makers in the world adopt Quantum dot TV technology, they can spread the brand of QLED widely.

"OLED TVs are growing rapidly this year, but quantum dot TVs are not easy to spread," an industry expert said. "OLED can only supply panels to customers at LG Display, but Quantum Dot is a material technology.£¿
