[Digitial Times, Park Seul-gee] LG Display has developed a 77-inch transparent flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) for the first time in the world, laying the groundwork for creating a new display market. This display is expected to be commercialized as a product which can be integrated with the fourth industry such as digital signage, transparent infotainment display applied to autonomous vehicles, smart desk and augmented reality (AR) aquarium.

LG Display revealed on June 22 that it held the ¡®Transparent Flexible Display National Project Performance Share Meeting¡¯ held at the Seoul Olympic Parktel in Bangi-dong, Seoul. Lee In-ho, Vice Minister of Industry and Commerce, Chief of Industrial Technology Evaluation and Management Department, Seo Kwang-hyun, Vice President of Korea Display Association and Yeo Song-dok, LG Display`s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO & President) and Kang In-byung, Chief Technology Officer (CTO & executive director) has attended.

Transparent Flexible Display National Project is a project to develop a ultra high-resolution (UHD) transparent flexible display of 60 inches or larger and an IT convergence infotainment system that utilizes it. The project, which is a consortium of the government and the private sector, has been implemented since August 2012, with a total investment of KRW 126 billion.

LG Display, a leading company in the national policy task, developed a transparent flexible display which implements a 77-inch, UHD resolution, transmittance of 40%, and a curvature radius of 80R (radius of 80mm radius). It is a result of over 60 inches, which was originally planned, and a curvature radius of over 100. LG Display also succeeded in developing a 55-inch variable transmissive display which is able to select light transmission and shading.

As a result, equipment makers in the back-end industry have developed a large-area transparent flexible display device for the first time in the world, securing competitiveness in the development of materials and equipment. LG Display has introduced 18-inch flexible OLED and transparent display in 2014, an 18-inch rolled-block display with a curvature radius of 30 mm in 2015 and a 40-percent transparency display in 2016.
