Hyundai and Kia Motors are expected to showcase more than 18 SUV types by 2020 to meet the rapidly growing demand for sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

So far, Hyundai and Kia have failed to respond to the rapidly increasing demand for SUVs due to their low SUVs. Worldwide SUV sales have increased by 20% from the previous year.

According to related industries on August 16, Hyundai will increase the number of its SUVs to nine, from mini SUVs to large SUVs by 2020. Currently, Hyundai has four SUVs: Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe, and Max Cruz. Hyundai Motors plans to release the hydrogen car FE and Kona electric car at the end of this year or next year and to launch two smaller SUVs smaller than Kona. Small SUVs are planned to leverage the platform of compact car accent, which is one step lower as existing Kona shares the Avante platform. In addition, the existing Max Cruise-class large SUV also adds products.

Kia Motors, on the other hand, has a relatively large number of SUVs compared to Hyundai, and plans to introduce another KONA SUV in the next two years. The industry predicted it would likely use the top-of-the-range K3 skeleton as the Stonic modified the Pride skeleton. Kia Motors has added Stonic in the second half of this year to build the SUV lineup that leads to the Stonic, Niro, Sportage, Sorento and Mohave. The company also owns the existing Carens, Carnival, and Soul, which are considered to be the largest SUVs in Korea.

Hyundai and Kia Motors are increasing their SUVs in the short term because the demand for SUVs is growing rapidly. Hyundai and Kia sold 1.770 million units in the global market last year, down 1.7% from the previous year. Sales of the top five automakers in the world have declined. The industry is analyzing the sluggish sales due to the lack of proper response to rapidly growing SUV demand.

According to Hyundai and Kia Motors, sales of SUVs in the world last year were 24.2 million units, up 20% from the previous year. Among them, small SUV sales increased. In particular, world small SUV sales amounted to 1,164,000 units in the first quarter, up 40% from the previous year. Hyundai and Kia, which lacked relatively small SUVs, had to watch the market. As a result, Hyundai and Kia decided to increase the number of new SUVs in July to overcome sluggish sales at overseas subsidiaries.

Meanwhile, global automakers are also planning to increase the number of new cars to meet growing demand for SUVs. US Ford plans to increase the number of SUVs from 7 to 13 by 2020. Audi is expected to increase from four to seven by 2019.

According to market research firm Zato Dynamics, the proportion of SUVs in European car sales is expected to reach more than 34% in 2020 from 28% this year. The sales portion of SUVs in Europe last year was 26%, up 8% from 2007. In addition, demand for SUVs is increasing every year in the US, China, and Southeast Asia.
