[Digital Times, Park Seul-gee] LG Display has decided to fill all Paju located `P10` plant (photo) with Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) production facility to be responsible for future profit source. The company was once concerned about investment in 10.5G LCDs, but it believes that LCDs, which predict China`s chicken games, cannot guarantee profitability. Instead, small- to mid-sized OLEDs are expected to grow rapidly, and large-size OLEDs will be expanded to include OLED production.

According to the electronics industry on June 21, LG Display plans to build a production facility only for small and large OLEDs, and plans to make an investment decision at a regular board meeting on July 25.

LG Display representative stated, "The P10 is going to go to OLED except for LCD." However, where and how much to invest in small-sized and large-sized in seven floors should be seen in the next month due to market situation, investment scale and equipment development. ¡°

Although, LG Display originally planned to invest in the P10 at the end of this month by making a temporary board meeting, it decided to suspend the board meeting after a month.

It is predicted that the company KRW 10 trillion investment in P10, is the focus of OLED investment as the OLED market will continue to grow on annual basis, although overcapacity is expected due to the operation of large-size LCDs in China starting next year.

Especially, the small- and medium-sized OLED market is expected to reach USD 23.7 billion next year from USD 14 billion last year and USD 29.4 billion by 2020. Therefore, LG Display has begun mass production of small and medium-sized OLEDs. In fact, LGD plans to double its OLED production capacity every year. The company plans to produce 15,000 OLEDs in E5 this year, 15,000 in 6th generation in E6 next year, and 6,000 OLEDs in 30,000 in E6 and P10 the following year. Meanwhile, the company is also considering plans to convert some LCD production facilities into small and medium-sized OLEDs.

The display industry expects to invest first in 8.5G and then go to the 10G level in the case of large-size OLEDs. One display industry expert said, "It is better to go to OLED, despite the yield is relatively low, because of the suspicion that large-size LCD will make a profit from the viewpoint of business profit. Apple, which has intimate relationship with LG Display, plans to have OLEDs in the iPad within a year and LG needs to speed up the production of small and medium-sized OLEDs."
