In the global TV market, UHD TV market share is expected to surpass full HD TV for the first time in early quarter 3. It is analyzed that UHD TV price decrease and popularization and UHD contents surge have accelerated product proliferation.

According to market researcher IHS Markit on September 13, UHD TV is expected to account for 34.1% of the total TV market by shipments in the third quarter of this year. This is 1.4 % points higher than full HD TV market share (32.7%). UHD TV has surpassed full HD TV shipments in about five years since 2012, when it first appeared on the market. UHD TV has already surpassed its full HD TV market share in the second quarter of last year, but this is the first time that the market share is reversed based on shipment volume.

Worldwide UHD TV shipments in the third quarter of this year were estimated at 8,800,000 units, more than full HD TVs (19,127,000 units). Until the third quarter of 2015, the share of UHD TV was only 14.6%, which was 31.7% behind that of full HD TV. However, it will occupy 25.8% in the third quarter of 2016, and it is expected to increase its market share by about 10% in a year and again by about 10% in a year.

On the other hand, full HD TV market share was 46.2% in the third quarter of 2015, but it is expected to plunge 13.5% point in two years. In fact, UHD TV has emerged as the mainstream of TV.

The increase in sales of UHD TVs is attributable to increased sales of premium UHD TVs by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which are the world`s top two TV makers. Also, UHD panel price is lowered, and TV price is lowered and it is said that it stimulated consumer`s purchase psychology. When Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics launched the 65-inch UHD TV in 2013, the price reached 8.9 million won, but the same 65-inch product price has dropped to KRW 2 million. It is interpreted that content providers such as Netflix and YouTube increased UHD content rapidly.

UHD is expected to become the mainstream TV market. "UHD TVs have surpassed full HD TVs both in terms of shipments and sales by strengthening the premium strategy centering on UHD TVs with UHD TV shipment expected to surpass 40% next year," said an industry expert. "UHD TV market is growing for a while "He also added.
