[Digital Times, Kim Yang-hyuk] Hyundai & Kia Motors announced on July 24 that it completed the development of server-type speech recognition technology using speech recognition of `Kakao I `, a Kakao artificial intelligence (AI) platform and applied it to the Genesis G70.

Server-based speech recognition is a technology that provides useful information such as destination search, restaurant, sightseeing spot, and repair shop through simplified voice recognition. It is characterized by simplifying complicated steps such as destination setting and area setting when setting existing navigation destination. For instance, if user presses the Speech Recognition button on the steering wheel and say "Hyundai Motors headquarters," the destination will be displayed on the navigation screen. Users can also use the navigation to search for destinations, search for places, and change the surroundings.

This is the first time that Korean automobile manufacturer has applied this system in a vehicle infotainment system, not in a way that works by linking a smartphone with an automobile. In order to utilize the information and contents provided by Future Connected Car while the driver is driving, sophisticated speech recognition technology is essential. The companies plan to commercialize the first connection-connected car through server-type speech recognition, which is a kind of connected car technology.

Server-based speech recognition technology was developed by Hyundai Kia Motors` Namyang R & D Center, `Vehicle IT Intelligent Research Lab` based on Kakao I`s speech recognition. It helps the driver to provide the best information in real time based on the data accumulated over many years by the Kakao I. Hyundai and Kia will provide server-type voice recognition to users of telematics service, BlueLink and reservation service, without any additional tariff increase. It will also be applied to the Genesis G70, which will be released in September.

Hyundai and Kia Motors representatives stated, "The voice recognition technology for vehicles will be used with connected vehicles to be developed in the future, so there will be no limit to the range of applications. It is the modernity that allows drivers to enjoy various contents while being focused on driving without being disturbed by unnecessary information. The goal of Hyundai and Kia is to develop speech recognition technology."
